Friction will only be eased when robust markets form around IP to the last mile: when customers demand IP compatible components, buy IoT platforms that support IP from end-to-end and only join those alliances/consortiums/groups that are aligned with standardizing both information technology and operational technology on IP

Joachim keynoted with the presentation, “IoT needs IP and IPv6 will drive IoT”, making the argument that for IoT to grow and reach its full potential it has to move away from proprietary siloed technologies and rest on IPv6.

Watch this video (or read the transcript) to hear Joachim Lindborg’s perspective on how he believes IPv6 will be the killer app in the connected home by enabling interconnectivity between all devices

Episode 10

There are five main IoT alliances/consortiums/groups focused on the Internet of Things and I interview them all. The Internet Protocol for Smart Object (IPSO) Alliance – episode E3 has been around for a while but the Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) – episode 9, the Thread group, the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) and the Allseen Alliance have sprung up recently. Depending on your focus, one or more of these organizations and are worth looking into when starting your IoT journey.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript) with Skip Ashton as we discuss the third organization, the Thread Group

There are three layers of standardization in IoT networking:
First, to get the data off the devices, a wireless (and sometimes a wired) interface is required - this is the media layer. To aggregate the data from all these devices, networking is required – this is the networking layer. Then once the devices can talk to each other, the question is what they talk to each other – this is the application layer.

Watch this video (or read the transcript) to hear Carsten Bormann go through the state of the art in IoT networking protocol standardization

Episode 7

Meet IoT’s three layers of protocols… the media layer, otherwise known as the physical layer or radio, the network layer and the application layer. Important because they make up the network stack that transports data from the sensor to the cloud. Important because they are standardized.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript) with Michael Richardson as he delivers a masterclass on everything you need to know about IoT’s three networking layers

Episode E4

Wondering how IoT is being rolled out in cities? Look up… into the light. Streetlights are the perfect steppingstone to produce smart cities. Changing their bulbs to LEDs pay for themselves in 3-5 years but also present the opportunity to build out wireless mesh networks. These elevated networks allow more lighting control/efficiency and provide the foundation for other smart city services such as power and parking.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript) with Sterling Hughes about lessons learned in deploying Silversping’s networks in cities around the world. This is encore episode 4, of 4, which originally played in the IPv6 Show podcast
