Episode 97

The technology of the software-defined product, containing the digital twin, is the most important technology in IoT – the most important because it’s directly related to creating value. Sometimes it can get a bit confusing.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript), where I share with you three lessons from the ICIP Technology course. The first, a simple example to demonstrate the software-defined product and digital twin. Then, an overview lesson on standards and protocols, and finally an overview lesson on IoT analytics and big data

Episode 89

The digital twin can be hierarchical – representing environments, systems, products and even parts. When digitizing supply networks with digital twins, the network can be a digital twin of its systems, which can be digital twins of their assets, which can be digital twins of their parts which themselves can be digital twins. Sound complicated? It doesn’t need to be. Start at the level of the hierarchy that returns the most value and proceed from there.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript), where I speak with Dr. Lane Warshaw and Aaron Parrott about the digital twin and its profound use in digital supply networks

Episode 88

We’ve discussed the digital twin at length but what is the cognitive digital twin? Is it possible to develop cognitive computing models with our data to endow our digital twin with artificial intelligence? The answer is yes.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript), where I speak with Dr. Ahmed El Adl about how this is done and the situations where an AI approach to reaching insights may be better than an analytics approach

Episode 87

The digital twin is a federation of data and models that can be analyzed or put into a simulation to create useful information about the past, present or future of the DTs physical twin. The type of model and the level of model can make or break the analysis or simulation.

Episode 86

The IoT platform is generally thought of as networking tech – middleware to connect all the IoT components together – and often it is, but a certain class of platforms, the so-called, application enablement platforms, or AEPs, also provide the development and execution environment for the digital twin.

Episode 85

The reason the digital twin, or software-defined product, as I prefer to call it, is the most important IoT tech, is because it’s the basis for the unique functionality possible from using the Internet of Things. Going beyond smarts or connectivity, it is this unique functionality that creates value, enough value that results in a profitable IoT product.

Episode 84

The digital twin, or software-defined product as I prefer to call it, is the most important tech in IoT, yet you hardly hear anything about it, when compared to other IoT tech such as sensing, networking and analytics. Maybe it’s because it’s such a new and abstract concept for most people. Well, that’s about to change.

Episode 79

There are two types of manufacturing: discrete manufacturing where the output is physical, countable things, and process manufacturing, where the output is chemistry – think oil & gas. Process manufacturing has been consistently instrumented for over two decades so it is not surprising that they’re a little ahead of their discrete counterparts on their path to IoT.
