Episode 39

Before talking go to market strategy, we need to talk, go to green light strategy. For most people, internal or external, IoT is a big unknown and unknowns are scary. To get that IoT pilot started, think small and evolutionary.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript), with Michael Minkevich about his experience in building IoT products and systems, and the best way to get them greenlit

To quote Mark Andreessen, “Software is eating the world” in industry after industry and it’s no different in ours. Old school SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) hardware is being consumed by Internet of Things software. Often people ask, “What’s the difference between M2M and IoT?” Besides the scope of the networks – M2M lives on a local area network or no network while IoT lives on a wide area network – the other major difference is SCADA consists of proprietary hardware like programmable logic controllers whereas the heart of IoT is software.

Watch this video (or read the transcript) to see Ron DeSerrano compare and contrast his company’s SCADA system with its new Internet of Things platform including the business models

Episode 18

It’s a heck of a lot easier than it used to be but most IoT projects still involve custom system integration – the question now is how much. Although the definition of an IoT platform, or AEP, is not always clear, what is clear is that using a platform saves a lot of time and a lot of system integration work. There may be legitimate reasons to develop your own platform in house but by definition, this means you become a software company – big time.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript) with Bryan Kester to get his take on what an IoT platform is, the technologies involved and a candid view on the strengths and weaknesses of IoT platforms today

Episode 3

Sensors from the M2M world are evolving into connected sensors for IoT. Same sensor tech but now the sensor needs to communicate outside of a local and often proprietary network. Goodbye 35 year-old Modbus, used in SCADA of yesteryear and hello layered communication, needed in the Internet of Things to onboard billions of sensors.

Listen to this podcast (or read the transcript) with Mike Fahrion as he explains not only the anatomy of today’s connected sensor, but also why we’re moving to a layered communication stack
